The tree is up and decorated and my, oh my, it smells lovely. I feel sorry for my friends that have fake trees for that one reason. They can feel sorry for me when it comes time to sweep up the dead quills I find ALL YEAR LONG. In fact, I found some just last week the day before we put the tree up. Yes, I'm a crappy housekeeper.
The house is decorated, Christmas music is playing quietly in the background, a fire burns bright in the fireplace, Christmas cards just got ordered, and on the stove I have Christmas-in-a-pot simmering. Seeing as we live in the desert and the house is dry as a bone AND I wanted the house to smell festive, I threw a few things in a pan yesterday and got it simmering. I loved the smell so much that I put it in the fridge last night and fired up the stove this morning. Good thing I did as it will mask the vomit smell that's overtaken us. Poor Christmas Bear might have to go in the garbage if I can't get the puke off her sweet little face.
So here's whats in my Christmas-in-a-pot in case you, too, need to mask some stink and want to get in the spirit of Christmas. Or you could probably just light a candle...I guess I didn't think of that. Honestly, I think I lost more than 20 points on my IQ. I think I also lost brain matter when they pulled those babies out. Anyway, here's the festive scent ingredients.
3 cinnamon sticks broken in half (I had to use every ounce of strength I have in my weak hands to break those badboys in half)
1 cut up orange (I've been throwing Cuties peels in as we eat them)
1 cup of fresh cranberries
1.5 tsp of cloves
1.5 tsp of nutmeg
Throw it all in a large pot or pan (or maybe a crockpot set on high), fill up with water to about an inch from the top and set it over a medium flame until it boils and then turn down to a low flame. Et voila, c'est une Joyeux Noel! (going back to my grade 6 French...not sure if I got that right)
I should add that you'll have to keep adding water as it will evaporate. Unless you like the smell of burnt Christmas. Maybe you're weird like that.
